Strategic Planning

About our organization:

As the premier Asian American Film Festival of Oregon, DisOrient has been celebrating independent films for 17 years, showcasing authentic Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) voices, histories and stories. DisOrient was conceived by filmmaker and Eugene native Jason Mak, who saw the need for broader representation of Asian American voices and histories in the Eugene community. Just before the pandemic, DisOrient established itself as a non-profit 501(c)(3).

We promote representation, diversity and inclusion to broaden the narrative of who is American and to strengthen and build community. We highlight social justice themes that translate to universal human experiences. We believe in the power of film and storytelling to bring people together and to create positive change.

Project Description:

DisOrient has been run by an ever-changing, small but committed group of volunteers. We just completed our 17th annual film festival, with both in-person and online screenings. It has grown as a festival – both in scope and duration. We had a record number of 80 films in our program this year. While a good problem to have, we are experiencing severe growing pains and have been operating reactively to new opportunities, overstretching our capacity year after year.  We are ready to develop our first strategic plan to:

  • Create an organizational framework to plan each festival, grounded in our vision and mission
  • Build and manage an effective and reliable staff and returning volunteers, and plan each festival within the parameters of HR sustainability
  • Create a solid leadership foundation for the organization’s future

Your professional experience and knowledge of strategic planning would help this locally-grown, unique and important social justice event to thrive.

Key Deliverables:

  • Review/update DisOrient’s mission statement, board policies and by-laws
  • Assess current processes and structures including financial accounting, HR management and board recruitment
  • Hone organizational priorities and values that will serve as filters for our work, guide decision making, and prevent getting sidetracked
  • Develop a checklist for annual self-evaluation.
  • Prepare a 3-5 year actionable strategic plan document with mechanisms to monitor progress
