Marketing and Outreach Strategist

About our Organization:

Studies show children need daily at-home experiences with books to increase their exposure to the written word, literature, and a variety of informational topics, concepts, vocabulary, and cultures.

The harsh reality is that two thirds of low-income families own no books for their children.

Since becoming a nonprofit in 2008, The Children’s Book Bank has organized over 12,000 community volunteers to channel over 850,000 books into the hands and homes of over 73,000 children in need in the Portland area.

Time commitment: Large project, estimated at 121-250 hours. Flexible project schedule to be negotiated. Prefer completion within 3-5 months of start date.

Project Description:

THE NEED FOR DIVERSE BOOKS

Books have the power to be mirrors, windows, and doors—chances to see ourselves in a broader context, glimpses of worlds and lives beyond our own, and opportunities to learn and grow.

The Children’s Book Bank (CBB) believes it is important for ALL children to see themselves and their possibilities reflected in the stories they read. Books are most engaging when they are relevant to children’s lives. Culturally diverse books can increase a child’s interest in reading and help them find a sustained connection to books.

CBB wants to increase its diverse titles inventory and seeks a candidate who can develop a triangulated marketing and outreach strategy targeted at individual donors/foundations, corporate sponsors and publishers. The idea is this: culturally sensitive people/companies would sign on to provide financial or in-kind means to buy or acquire a particular diverse book title in large enough volume to build the inventory needed to give all CBB children a view of the world through a new storyline.

For instance, would an architectural firm support the purchase of 1000 copies of “City Shapes”?

Or how about a major tech company supporting the purchase of 1000 copies of “Ada Twist, Scientist”?

Key Deliverables:

Develop a marketing and outreach strategy to:

  • Build out existing framework to identify new individual/ foundation supporters, businesses, and publishers, and key contacts within each to approach
  • Research each identified corporation’s history with philanthropic giving and corporate social responsibility initiatives to discover alignments with diverse book titles desired by CBB
  • Generate possible recognition benefits for different levels of support meaningful/advantageous to donor/sponsor (e.g. if an individual/corporate sponsor would like acknowledgement on the first page of their sponsored book)
  • Engage in one-on-one outreach to begin relationship building with identified targets
  • Advise on how to work with publishers to price out volume and/or custom printing
  • Assess needs for/develop branding, messaging/copywriting content for website, pitch decks and other collateral to appeal to the targets identified
